On September 6th, the first Sunday in the Season of Creation, the visual images on and beside the altar and the lectern focused our attention on what happens when there is no water. The brown clothes illustrated how the earth becomes barren and streams dry up. The dead branches, leaves and ferns brought home to us the reality that without water all living things die. Creation cannot survive without water. Slips of paper were handed out and we were asked to write on them what environmental issue breaks our hearts.

Please keep these issues in your prayers this week:

  1. The way we treat this planet.
  2. Climate change!
  3. Water – too much, not enough; misuse of, abuse of; fracking.
  4. Creatures, including aquatic animals in oceans and lakes, damaged by pollution.
  5. Animals becoming extinct, such as polar bears and bees.
  6. Worry about the world we will leave for the children – they won’t have nature as we know it.
  7. Food waste, food uncertainty, food prices that families cannot afford.
  8. Wasted space in existing buildings; urban sprawl; population growth.
  9. Making clean, drinkable water available to all.
  10. Burning of fossil fuels, increasing carbon emissions, and ignoring the consequences: driving up the temperature over the line of 1.5 degrees that was drawn with hotter temperatures expected.
  11. Corporations and others using protected parks and lands for profit around the world; wildlife habitats being destroyed for financial gain.
  12. Lack of concern and action by government levels on climate change and increased use of fossil fuels; bending the rules for land developers.
  13. Large plants for AI and computer technology that use tremendous amounts of water.
  14. Data centres that are blocking the sound waves the bees need to live and communicate.
  15. Owners of solar and windfarms, gas and oil wells, need to pay for decommissioning.
  16. Plastics in our waterways, choking fish and sea life, degrading landscapes and bringing microplastics to all.
  17. Wildfires.
  18. Clear cutting of forests.
  19. The state of the wetlands with unhoused people camping in them.
  20. Poisoned environments.
  21. Not planting trees in residential settings.
