The Proper Liturgy for Maundy Thursday recalls Jesus’ institution of the Eucharist as the “Last Supper” and his commandment that we love one another. The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin word for commandment, mandatum. On this night, we share a simple supper in remembrance of the last meal Jesus ate with his disciples. This agape meal, or love feast, will feature traditional foods like those Jesus and his friends would have eaten at the Last Supper. The service includes a Eucharist and the stripping of the altar. The sanctuary will stand unadorned and empty until Easter, symbolic of the desolation felt by Jesus’ disciples from the time of his betrayal, passion and death, until his resurrection.
